Central Austin is comprised of many neighborhoods, including downtown, Travis Heights, Bouldin Creek, Clarksville, Zilker, Riverside, Barton Hills and Barton Heights, among others. These areas are as diverse as the city itself, but what they have in common is easy access to all the excitement of downtown Austin, including myriad award-winning restaurants, lots of shopping options, numerous performing arts venues, the state capitol, and, well, work, with dozens of office buildings housing thousands of workers. They’re also close to the city’s recreational crown jewel: Zilker Park, and all the glorious fun this 350-acre greenspace encompasses, including Barton Springs Pool, a spring-fed outdoor pool beloved by Austinites.
While downtown proper is home to many condo-type residences — many fairly new as Austin’s downtown building boom continues unabated, many of the other neighborhoods feature charming early 1900s bungalows peppered with modern infill construction. Some of the neighborhoods have important historical stories to tell, such as Clarksville’s founding by former enslaved persons in the 1870s.
